Als nächstes also der Irak... Ist das nicht Wahnsinn, bin ich lebensmüde?! Nein, keine Sorge. Beim Nordirak, den ich den nächsten ein bis zwei Wochen bereisen werde, handelt es sich um die autonome Provinz Kurdistan, die als relativ friedlich und sicher gilt. In dieser Region agieren die hiesigen Kurden schon seit den achtziger Jahren weitgehend unabhängig und errichteten eine Art "Staat im Staate Irak". Diese Provinz gilt als der "andere Irak". Während des Rest des Landes seit der Invasion der Amerikaner in Gewalt und Chaos versunken ist, konnten sich die Kurden vom Terror des arabischen Iraks weitgehend abschirmen. Anschläge hat es in den letzten Jahren so gut wie gar keine gegeben und auch sonst sorgt die starke kurdische Armee für die Sicherheit in der Provinz. Selbst das Auswärtige Amt hält das Reisen in dieser Region für weitgehend unbedenklich. Dank des Ölreichtums sind die Menschen hier relativ wohlhabend. Wie üblich in Ölstaaten ist das Benzin sehr billig und es gibt sogar ein gewisses Grundeinkommen. Trotz unbestreitbarer Probleme (Korruption, Sozialsystem, Stellung der Frau etc.), die typisch für ein islamisches Schwellenland sind, dient die Provinz Kurdistan dem Rest des Landes als ein Musterbeispiel fuer einen friedlichen und demokratischen Irak.

In this region, the local Kurds have acted largely independently since the eighties and established a "state within a state of Iraq." This province is considered the "other Iraq". Whereas the rest of the country has sunk into violence and chaos since the invasion of Americans, the Kurds were largely shielded from the terror of the Arab Iraq. Terror attacks have been very rare in recent years and also in other terms, the powerful Kurdish army ensures the security in the province. Even the German Foreign Office conisders traveling in this region as relatively safe. Thanks to the oil wealth, the people are relatively well off here. As is customary in the oil states, petrol is very cheap and there is even a certain basic income for the citizens. Despite undeniable problems (corruption, social system, status of women, etc.) that are typical of an emerging Islamic country, the province of Kurdistan, by comparison to the rest of the country, serves as a prime example for a peaceful and democratic Iraq.
